Before He was born

Isabel was lying on the couch, watching a dull afternoon program on TV. Noticing the movements of her son in her bulky belly. And smiled, imagining how it might be to have him nestled in his arms soon. Miguel entered the room with a folder in his hand. Passed around the couch to sit beside her and gave a protective hug over the shoulders.

-Are you okay? Do you want me to bring anything?
-You're here. That's everything I need- and she kissed him.

Hey boy! What a pleasure being here right? Although somewhat obscure, your mother is not entirely transparent ... hehe. I came to visit, to bring a gift, now you're about to go out there, the theater of the world ...

Isabel took his hand and gently supported on her belly. He surrounded his eyes, while drawing a huge smile.

... And before they come to manipulate you from the bright side. The game began centuries ago you know? And this time your blood will not be with the wrong side. You can be proud, man, because we don’t take anyone in our ranks ...

-It moved...- he said, looking at her.
-It felt the hand of his loving father- ... she whispered.

Your parents have made a promise of you, believe me. I have looked around the branches of your genealogic tree and... wow! What memories! Your great-grandfather on the father side, for example, gave us great joy... jo! you do not see how he handled the ax ... not to mention your great-grandmother, Mrs. Tejeda, who drowned in mud to their defective offspring of the light, without regard... what a great woman...

-Oh! Did you feel it? What a kick!
-Of course, if it continues like that it will cause internal injuries- she laughed- This one goes for sports.
-The pride of his father ...

But let us forget nostalgy: you overcome them all, I see. Allow me to put my hands in your little brain...

-Ah!
-What is it, dear?

... I will extract a couple of things from there than will be worthless for you. Let's see ... a moment ... that's it. Perfect.

-Uh ... I think it was nothing. I have felt a sudden move as if they had wanted to turn around.
-What now? Do you feel anything, any pain?
-Nothing ... nothing ... this is simply a scare. It seems relaxed now.

Well, boy, it seems that you are fully prepared. As you can, begin to reap the merits, and that you are our champion. I will come back to visit occasionally, over time. See ya...

----:----

The last nurse left the room, closing the door softly behind him. Isabel was lying in bed with the baby sucking on her breast, and Miguel sat in a chair beside him patting his skinny head. They both watched with delight as well and could spend hours, watching in complete silence. Everything was going well, and this was his moment. Deep joy and happiness.

-He’s so handsome! - Isabel exclaimed letting herself get carried away by emotion- and that seems to wake up right?
-Yes, of course ... the beauty of mother and father's intelligence- Miguel laughed.
-Of all our favorite names what you think it is better?

Miguel left his scintillating joy abated, and was thoughtful for a long time, as if in the face of her son there was writing his name in visible letters. At last he spoke:

-Jesús. I love this name for it.
-Yes, it is very nice- confirmed Isabel, rocking to his eldest son, excited.

They kissed with affection, happy as ever had been.

While He was watching with fixation.
Without batting any eyelid.

Cheers!

Christmas in Mexico

Well, to begin we have almost a month of daily celebrations in December-January. From December 12th to January 6th this set of days is called Guadalupe-Reyes or just Lupe-Reyes, a Posada's Marathon. December 12th  is the day of the holy virgin, (we Mexicans are like 98% Catholics) the day is called: El dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe
A beautiful story about an Indian and the virgin happened a few centuries ago… and we still remember.

"This story begins with an Indian called Juan Diego (now he’s a Saint), the year was 1531. This guy was in the middle of harvest in the hill of Tepeyac near the center of Mexico City. The holy Virgin appeared and talked to him. She asked him to tellthe high priestof that time to build a temple in that place. The priest didn’t believe Juan Diego at first so he needed a proof. The virgin asked Juan Diego to carry some flowers to the priest and to show them to him. When San Diego did this and the flowers fell from his cloak, the virgin made a miracle, she appeared as an image in San Diego’s cloak. The original cloak is now in La Basilica de Guadalupe in Tepeyac Hill in Mexico City. When this happened it was December 12th 1531, the Virgin appeared 4 times to Juan Diego. In 1999 the Basilica of our Lady of Guadalupe was the most visited Catholic shrine in the world.

This is the image of Holy Virgin of Guadalupe. The Mother of all Mexicans".

An interesting fact of the face of the image, if you look closely to the eyes… you can see the Holy Virgin on them 0.o… AMAZING!!!
Every December 12th, a lot of Mexicans come to sing Las Mañanitas to the virgin, all over the country… banda and mariachis never miss this day.
La Lomita. This church is one of the most popular in Culiacán, it’s at the top of a Hill. A great festival takes place surroinding this church at december 12th =).

Next thing we have are the Posadas:
Posadas are just regular parties that happens from December 12th to December 24th. People gather together to sing Christmas songs, have fun, to eat tamales and atole.
Some of the songs people sing are:
Blanca Navidad, Pastores a Belen, Rodolfo el Reno, Noche de Paz, Posadas, etc… of course in Spanish. These songs are called Villancicos.
The most popular song we sing is: Posadas. This song is sang by two parts, one inside the house and the other is outside. People outside is asking for a place to stay in the night to the people inside. Like Mary and Joseph when Jesus was about to be born. A few times people inside will deny the entrance to the outsiders.

En nombre del cielo os pido posada,

pues no puede andar
mi esposa amada.
Aquí no es mesón
sigan adelante,
yo no puedo abrir
no sea algún tunante.
No seas inhumano,
tennos caridad,
que el Dios de los cielos
te lo premiara.
Ya se pueden ir
y no molestar
Porque si me enfado
los voy a apalear.
Mi esposa es Maria
es Reina del Cielo
y madre va a ser

del Divino Verbo
¿Eres tú Jose?
¿Tu esposa es Maria?
Entren, peregrinos
No los conocía.

In these parties we have Piñatas and CandiesOn December 24th we have Noche Buena. During this night all family joins a great dinner. Usually is turkey, chicken and something ele. After midnight it’s officially Christmas so everybody hugs each other and we open some gifts, los Regalos de Navidad (Christmas presents).

Introducing... the Piñata

During the night, before Christmas,my family used to create a Pastorela. Pastorela is the representation of what happened the days when Jesus Christ was born.
We tell the story to kids that Santa is coming from North Pole (Rovaniemi, Northern Finland) to visit every kid to that behave nicely during the year. He comes with reindeers and comes down to the living room where the Christmas tree is. We put Pines to represent Christmas trees.
On December 25th is Christmas. And again our family joins to a great breakfast when we have Menudo. And we call it: Recalentado. Usually, little kids use this day to show off the presents they had last night =P.

Menudo, a very Mexican Dish.
On December 30th we have new years eve and again we celebrate with music, food and piñatas. After midnight we hug each other to celebrate the new year!!.

On January 6th we have: El Dia de los Reyes MAgos. The day of wizard kings… supposedly the day when the 3 kings joined to meet the new messiah in Belen. This time we tell a story to kids… that those kings will come to visit good kids to deliver a gift in the Christmas tree.
In the night of that day we eat: La rosca de los Reyes (Kings Cake). Inside the cake we put a little doll. The one who gets the doll after splitting the cake, will have to organize a party and prepare tamales for El Dia de la Candelaria, the candlemas day.

Rosca de Reyes

Cheers!

The First Flip Cupper

Yesterday morning, I was just about getting ready to leave town sitting on my seat in the train 952 while thinking about the new focus for my Master’s Thesis project, a flash of uncertainty came suddenly to my mind. I'm just reading my notes from the previous presentation I just had half an hour ago with my thesis supervisors but then a question comes disturbing my mind. Who was the first Flip cupper in history?

Many people may know about Flip Cup, that awesome sport that has crossed an unimaginable numbers of borders starting from the new continent and now has spread almost to the whole world (the drinking youth world). But the question is, do people really know the history of Flip Cup? Do they really know when did it start and where? Who was the pioneer of flipping the Cups?

Well, I started to do some research and I think I managed to get to a conclusion about this majestic topic.

But first, let's talk about a bit about Flip Cup for the people who might not be so familiar with that discipline.

Flip Cup is way more than just a sport. Flip Cup is a discipline, a status, a religion, a cause. Flip Cup can be a meaning of life for many lost youngsters who are desperate to find a path to follow in society. Flip Cup is now practiced by athletes all over the world.

It is a team based drinking game sport. Two teams of an equal number of players athletes stand on opposite sides of a table field facing each other. In front of each teammate there is a disposal plastic cup filled with set amount of beverage. At the start, the first member of each team has to drink the beverage from his cup. When finished, the cup must be placed at the edge of the table and the player who drank the beverage attempts to flip the cup using his fingers. It is forbidden to use both hands, or blow the cup to guide it. If the player is unsuccessful then the cup is reset and re-flipped. Only after the first teammate manages to flip the cup, the next person on his team has to proceed. Whichever team finished drinking and flipping all of its cups first wins.

So, now knowing what the discipline of Flip Cup is, let’s go back to the research question. Who was the first flip cupper? Well, according to the empirical evidence found in a short research, the following conclusions are stated.

Evidence #1: According to the Bible, the first miracle Jesus did was to convert water into wine at the Wedding of Cana (John 2:1-11). If there is something you need in order to have flip cup is precisely beverages. So he managed to save the wedding party by accomplishing this first miracle.

He was never afraid of passing by the learnings of a good flipcup match.

Evidence #2: Jesus was a party monster. Jesus was 33 when he decided to have a dinner with his 12 mates. It must have been a hell of a party because almost 2000 years after we still remember that night (John 13:21). And yet Christians celebrate it once a week, which takes me to evidence a bit forward.

He will always look after you. He is a good Bro.

Evidence #3: There is one very famous work of art, a painting, made by Leonardo da Vinci between 1495 and 1497. In the painting you can see Jesus sitting in the middle of the table acting as a judge (you can see his arms stretched indicating from which side the round will begin). You can also see the 12 apostles divided into 2 major groups, six in one side and six in the other side of the table. Within those groups smaller subgroups of three are formed: Bartholomew, James and Andrew; Judas, Peter and John; Thomas, James and Philip; and Matthew, Thaddeus and Simon. That means that probably they were having a 3 member’s team tournament that night.

Jesus in the middle of the table yelling "Starting from this side".

Evidence #4: According to Christian culture, families should gather on Sundays in the local church to honor The Lord. In the church the main thing that happens is that the Priest executes the Mass according to a certain protocol. There is one moment during that protocol when the Priest offers a zip of whine to the community using a golden cup. Those persons who are clean of sin, that means they confessed their sins and where forgiven previously, have the right of communion with Jesus Christ, so they have to zip a bit of whine (Alcohol). After sharing alcohol with the people, the priest then proceeds to have his own zip (usually more than the zips shared) at the altar (and in front of an image of Jesus) and then he flips the cup.

As you can see by the ammount of cups in the altar, some priest take the Flip Cup teaching very seriously.

Another cool miracles Jesus did but not related completely to flip cup:
  1. He cured Lazarus terrible 4-days hangover just by saying "Lazarus, come out bro!" (John 11:1-46).
  2. He managed to calm drunk people having strokes and epileptic seisures due to high amount of alcohol in blood. He later teached them the right way to drink (Mark 1:21-28; 1:32-34; 3:20-30) (Luke 4:31-37; 4:40-41; 11:14-23) (Matthew 8:16-17; 9:32-34; 12:22-28).
  3. He cured a few people's blindness because they didn't know exactly what they drank the night before. He later teached them the right way to drink (Matthew 9:27-31) (Mark 8:22-26) (John 9:1-12).
  4. He cured a man with a withered hand. He probably got that injure because of an excess in flip cupping in prior days (Mark 3:1-6) (Luke 6:6-11) (Matthew 12:9-13).
  5. He managed to wake up after a 3 days hangover recovery (Matthew 28:1-7; 28:9-10; 28:16-20) (Mark 16: 1-7; 16:9; 16:12; 16:14-19) (Luke 24:1-7; 24:13-31; 24:36-50) (John 20:1-18; 20:19-31; 21:1-22). People say that he managed to go to hell just to kick Lucifer's ass with his voice (Peter 3: 18-20).

With the scent of Riga

Some of my friends and I had the chance to visit one of the most iconic city in the Baltic States last weekend. Riga is the Capital, and biggest city, of Latvia and the European Capital of Culture in 2014. It is located at the south coast of the Gulf of Riga along the Balic Sea. With almost 700, 000 inhabitants, Riga is also the biggest city of the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania).

A bit of history
The city was founded in 1201 in the edges of Daugava river. The city has been since always an important point of commerce between nations. It has been hit by several wars including two world wars.
The city has been ruled by Germans, Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth, Swedish Empire, Russian Empire. In 1918, the city was able to claim independence, but during WWII, in 1940, the city was occupied by the Soviet Union and by Nazis from 1941 to 1944.
After the War, the city came under Soviet dominance again, but in 1991 it got its definitive independece.

Old Riga (Vecriga)
Old Riga is the historical and geographical center of Riga. It's located next to Daugava river. This part of the city is famous because of its many churches and iconic buildings such as Riga's Cathedral, St. Peter's Church, and the Building of the Brotherhood of Blackheads.
A narrow street in the heart of Old Riga.

St. Peter's Cathedral

This used to be the main cathedral during middle ages in Riga. The Cathedral has been rebuilt and enlarged several times. During WWII artillery projectiles inflamed the cathedral and the tower collapsed. The tower was resurrected in 1973, but the cathedral restoration was completed in 1984.
It is very difficult to find an angle to get a full body picture from the church.

Brotherhood of Blackheads
The Blackheads was characteristically a common union of young, unmarried merchants and ship captains in the Hansa cities. They chose St. Maurice to be their patron, an imaginary African black moor. That's the reason of the name of the brotherhood "the Blackheads".
One of the most emblematic buildings in Old Riga. Also one of the most beautiful.

After the Republic of Latvia regained its independence, the restoration of the House of Blackheads started, which was completed in 2000.

Academy of Science
Founded after WWII as the Latvian SSR Academy of Sciences, it is the official academy of Latvia. Nowadays, it is associated with the country's foremost scientists.
That's a huge building. It can be seen from many parts of the city.

Freedom Monument
Oficially unveiled in November 18th 1935, the day when in 1918 the Republic of Latvia was funded. It is a symbol for Latvian people and represents freedom, independence and sovereignty. The monument is honouring the soldiers killed during the Latvian war of independence.
There are two soldiers in service guarding the monument, The Guard of Honor.

Labietis
Something that we couldn't miss in the trip was the chance of trying a good crafted beer. Lucky for us, there is one bar (The Only Bar) that specializes in brewing authentic Latvian crafted beer, and it's located not so far from the heart of Riga.
Labietis*

Alus darbnica Labietis is a bar that lets you enjoy the taste of 10 different crafted beer while you can see the process of brewing through a glass. It literally shows you how to produce the beverage you are drinking.

* I do not own the rights of his picture.

The Mistery of the Church of Saint Apolonia (Extraction from La Llorona Magazine)

The Community of Santa Apolonia is located three hours from the city of San Ignacio, in the state of Sinaloa. Until 10 years ago, most of the population was living there. There were around 250 people. Today, this village is nothing more than a ghost town that keeps a great mistery around its church.
The last Sherif of Santa Apolonia, Alfonso Chicas, points that just like the case of the village of Ajoya, in Santa Apolonia people lived the boom and celebrations of town. This festival happens every February 9th where there played a great number of bands that used to follow the tracks of the village followed by people singing and yelling and having fun. Celebrations began the 7th and ended until the 12th of the same month.

"Between these days everything was fun and happiness, around one thousand people joint together from other municipalities or states just to take some of the fun or just to pay debts to Santa Apolonia"- Sheriff said.

But everything began to decline due to violence, since many people started to emigrate.
"The last party the people lived and was great like all the others happened in 2001"- Sherrif stated- "after that, everything was history".

This town keeps, with no doubt at all, one of the oldest churches in the country. It happens that this church is older than the Church of San Agustin which has now more than 460 years. These two churches, according to the story, were built by jesuits. As time passed by, both churches were deteriorating and when this place was inhabited people tried to rebuild it, but never made it. Strange events prevented it.
Elders who have lots of knowledge from Santa Apolonia stated that this church never had a roof, due to people who tried to build it but never could. Strange fact is that these pople who tried to build the ceiling died in the place in a tragic manner.
Lots of people asure that the gold booms that this village lived a long time ago keeps people to believe there´s some treasures in the surroinding areas of the church. Some of them had dared to dig in these places, but none of them found gold or any kid of treasure. The only thing they found was human bones. For this, it is believe that these places were used as a graveyard some time ago. In fact, some people believe that under the temple there is a great tunnel.
It happened ten years ago when inhabitants asked municipal government to install the roof to the temple, but first they had to level the walls of thick adobe.
First it came a person sent by the department of public works, who just came once since the first day of work he put the bricks in the walls and the next day all of them were lying in the floor completely broken. According to this man, an old person warned him about strange things that happened near that church.
Due to the guy never returned, villagers made the request to Amadeo Zazueta Larafga, current Economic Development Subsecretary, who in return hired another person to do the job. This new person also worked only for one day because the same thing happened to him.
The last worker who tried to rebuild the church was Romualdo Ríos Arisqueta, also sent by the city council. He also worked for one day because he didn’t find only bricks on the floor, but also felt a strange force that almost threw him off the scaffold he was on more or less 5 meters high.

Romualdo tells:
"I remember it was the year 2000, when I was sent to this place and even I knew some of the story I didn’t believe it, so I came and started to work and set everything up. I climbed up the scaffold and started to put the bricks on the wall".

He also tells:
"The scaffold was high, by it was well set in. It was tied in the way it couldn´t move to any side or direction. But suddenly it got untied and it started to move like a swing while I was still up. There was no place I could grab on. It seemed like someone was moving the scaffold on purpose, but there wasn´t anybody there".

After a few moments and a long deep breath:
"As soon as it finished moving, I got off the thing and ran to the nearest house. There I got sugared water from the family inside so the frighten could dissapear. I also remember an old man who told me “if tonight the wall doesn´t fall off, then that´s a gain”.
And in the same day, a kid came over and climbed the scaffold to the top of the wall and stayed there for a long time. Probably like 20 minutes because he couldn´t go down. It seemed that a strange force prevented him.
He also said that the next day he wento to continue his duty, but a big was the surprise he had when he saw all the huge bricks down in the soil and most of them broken or cut by the half.

"This is an unexplained thing, at least I can´t understand how this happened"- he tells –"since the bricks of this size are almost imposible to fall down because of the proportions, but this really happened. Like if someone ripped them off the wall on purpose".
This was the last day he returned to the village, since he felt these events like a warning. A waring that made him believes that next time he would find death. Something similar happened to other people who didn’t listen to these advices. By these times there were about 40 people living in the village. Four years ago, all of them migrated to other municipalities.
The image of Santa Apolonia, better known as “the protector of the dentists”, was moved to San Ignacio were at least 13 families from this villages live. The image lies in the church of San Juan Bosco where it has been for 4 years now. Faithfuls from the whole state come and serve prayers to the image, just like they did when they were living in Santa Apolonia.
Santa Apolonia has become a ghost town now, the same as Campanillas, El Verano, Bordontita, El Chilar, Pueblo Nuevo, Huaracha, Güillapa, Contraestaca and Tepehuajes in San Ignacio. 22 families that were living there, moved to Culiacán or to Cruz de Elota. They ran away frightened because of the violence they lived four years ago. Even though some people tells that the village looks like it is still inhabited since some of them return to clean the houses and the streets believing that someday they´ll return to live in that place again.
They also said that inside the church there is a small room where they have some images. Sometimes people come and clean that room and the images as weel to avoid them to deteriorate.
They pointed that one year ago, one person from the near community of El Espiritu has seen in several times, one little girl running in the surrounding areas of the church. He first thought the girl was missing since the whole town is desolated. But it wasn´t like that. When he pursued the girl, he saw her banishing in from of him.
And these are just a few of the stories that people tells from the church of Santa Apolonia…

Cheers!
